R1234ze (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) is a “sister refrigerant” to R1234yf, but it is specifically optimized for large-scale industrial applications and stationary systems. It belongs to the class of low-GWP HFO refrigerants.

Refrigerant R1234ze overview
R1234ze has a GWP of 7, which is extremely low. It is chemically classified as a PFAS compound, but its environmental impact is lower than that of R1234yf. R1234ze degrades into TFA at a rate of approximately 10–15%, whereas R1234yf degrades almost entirely into TFA in the atmosphere.
Typical applications of R1234ze:
- Large water chillers (e.g. data centers and hospitals)
- Industrial heat pumps and commercial refrigeration systems
- Propellants and blowing agents
R1234ze is used in applications where high energy efficiency and extremely low environmental impact are required.

2025–2029: Virgin refrigerants >2500 GWP are banned. Only reclaimed/recycled >2500 GWP allowed (new appliances). Reclaimed refrigerants with GWP <2500 can still be used for servicing and maintenance after 2032.
