Information about refrigerant R452A
R452A (commercially known as Opteon™ XP44) is a blend of HFC and HFO refrigerants developed primarily as a replacement for R404A and R507. It has become particularly important in refrigerated transport applications, as it offers lower climate impact without significantly increasing compressor discharge temperatures.

Refrigerant R452A overview
Typical applications of R452A:
- Refrigerated transport, which is its primary application. It is widely used in transport refrigeration units and reefer containers
- Commercial refrigeration (e.g. display cases and freezer cabinets)
- Large-scale industrial cold storage (e.g. in the food and pharmaceutical industries)
- Retrofit applications (as a replacement for older R404A systems)
Additional information
2025–2029: Virgin refrigerants >2500 GWP are banned. Only reclaimed/recycled >2500 GWP allowed (new appliances). Reclaimed refrigerants with GWP <2500 can still be used for servicing and maintenance after 2032.
